Research Topics
My research focuses on three main aspects: applications of neural networks, distributed systems, and e-learning technologies.

NEURAL NETWORKS
Neural network systems have been widely used to model and control dynamic processes because of their extremely powerful adaptation capability in response to nonlinear behaviors. Our main objective is the development of an open and distributed architecture to support the development and application of collaborative intelligent control techniques in chemical processing plants. [list of publications]

DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS
Distributed technologies play an important role in the development of e-learning systems as well as in the implementation of distributed neuro-control systems. The introduction of new decentralized models of computing (such are P2P overlay networks) brings a new perspective in the development of these applications. The present work has been developed in collaboration with the AST Research Grup. [list of publications]

E-LEARNING
The main aspects that will characterize the 21st century will be the rapid changes in the social, economical and technological areas. In the Education field, the use of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will play an important role in this process of change, contributing actively to diminish the isolation and the lack of cooperative learning between the individuals, effect that often cause the application of traditional models of distant learning. In this sense, technology-based distant learning aims at the introduction of new models of open and distributed learning by means of the use of advanced communication infrastructures and multimedia services. The present work has been developed in collaboration with the L@TE Research Laboratory. [list of publications]
